New To AdSense?  Here's A Simple Explanation

What's Google AdSense All About Then?

Actually it's very straightforward. You'll be familiar with seeing Google AdSense when you go to a website and find a series of little adverts which can appear anywhere, but are often on the right hand side of the page.

Obviously in a real-life situation the ad will be relevant to the subject of the page which could be about absolutely anything under the sun -- after all, web pages can be on any subject. Right?

These little ads are therefore contextual to their surroundings and rather cleverly change each time someone visits your page and as and when your actual page itself changes.

Why Is This So Powerful?

Well let's say that you own a website and you want to try and earn some additional revenue from your pages. Rather than having to go out and find people who are advertising the kinds of goods and services that might appeal to your readership, Google AdSense does the whole thing for you.

Yep, they source the right ads and they display them on your page.

How Do The Ads Appear On My Page?

Simple. When you sign up to the Google AdSense program you simply set up a campaign and select the size and shape of ads you'd like to display. Google then provides you with a piece of code (known as JavaScript code) that you cut-and-paste into your own website.

For example, on the right hand side of this page I've just placed pasted the code that is used to produce that sample advert I showed you a little further up the page. All I've done is to cut-and-paste this actual code into the HTML that makes up this webpage page.  Easy!

Now When People Click On My Ad, I Make Money

So far so good. A very straightforward.

But the clever part is yet to come. When someone visits my page and is attracted by the context-relevant Google ad they see display they may well click on the ad link and be taken to the advertisers website.

In return for that click-thru' the advertiser is going to pay Google for the traffic and Google, in turn, is going to pay me a commission for the lead. I'll be paid that commission regardless of what the visitor to the advertiser site does next. In other words, it isn't dependent on whether they decide to stick around and purchase something from the advertisers site. That's just not my business.

How Much Will Google Pay Me?

In a sense that's the million dollar question. Google has never published its criteria for paying publishers (that's you when you display a Google ad).  We do know that when Google AdSense was first established they would typically pay out around 50% of the value of the advertising to them.

Nowadays it's not quite so simple.

Google are using sophisticated algorithms to work out what the click from your actual site might be worth. You could say that they've cottoned on that not all clicks are created equal. Or to put that another way, some websites are of higher quality than others and tend to attract more serious browsers and traffic.

How About Some Ballpark Figures

Well how much you'll be paid depends on the cost of the keyword that the advertiser was bidding on.  So right now the keyword "Casino" might attract as much as $40 per click and you might expect to receive 50% of $20 of that just for someone clicking on the advert that you happened to display.

The problem is that high paying keywords are also the most competitively fought for ones. In other words, how are you going to get your Casino-related page ranked high enough in the search engines that anyone ever finds it and then clicks on the advert. Tricky stuff.

At the other end of the scale, some keywords cost as little as 10c. Much easier to create and optimize your own website to attract a low paying keyword, but of course having gone to all that effort, it's disappointing to only receive in the region of 5c for a click. Or to put it another way...  We all know that you can make money from collecting bottles and receiving the 5c back from the supermarket, but doing it enough to make real money -- now there's a challenge.

So How Much Can I Make Through Google AdSense?

The truth is that it's possible to make a fortune from the Google AdSense program, but you have to understand clear strategies, target the right kind of keywords which pay out a goodly amount, but are not over-competitive.

You'll need know a little about researching keywords and phrases, building the right kind of websites that get ranked by the search engines, driving traffic to your new website and quite a bit else besides.

Is This All About Google AdSense?

Actually, no it's not. Nowadays the other major search engines like MSN and Yahoo! are also offering similar types of programs and so the vast majority of what I'm about to teach you applies equally well to them too. In fact I'd go as far as recommending that you DON'T put all your eggs in one AdSense basket, because the one thing we know about internet marketing is that the rules do change from time-to-time and savvy marketers are already prepared for that to happen.
